The United States has a number of ‘destination’ cities that have been celebrated for power, landmarks… even food. But data does show that our cities are no longer attracting residents.

For decades, we’ve watched cities grow substantial suburban surroundings. And, at first, these were known as ‘bedroom communities’ because the jobs were still in the cities.

But that’s no longer the case. The Internet, the traffic, the taxation and crime have all contributed to a second migration… of businesses.

What’s Next for U.S. Cities?

The migration of both residents and business from cities is ongoing. There’s still suburban growth, but even that has changed.

Suburbia is beginning to spread. Freed from needing to commute into the city proper, suburbanites feel comfortable relocating even further away from the metro hubs.
